Online Chapter Meeting October 14, The Humane Gardener: Nurturing Habitat for Wildlife, with Nancy Lawson

Join NPSOT-Wilco online on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at 7:00 pm, when author Nancy Lawson will present The Humane Gardener: Nurturing Habitat for Wildlife.

Following a brief chapter business meeting, the guest presentation will last about an hour. The presentation will NOT be recorded for our YouTube channel.

About our topic: Why do we call some insects “beneficial” while others are “pests”? Why do we welcome some larger animals to our garden while calling others “nuisances”? Why are some plants considered “desirable” while others are “weeds”? In this myth-busting talk, learn how common growing methods divide the natural world into false dichotomies and perpetuate misperceptions about the wild species living among us. Discover practical ways to put humane gardening philosophies into action by protecting nesting sites for insects, birds and mammals; eliminating unintended hazards; identifying and nurturing plants that provide food and shelter; restoring habitat with minimal disturbance to animals; and humanely resolving conflicts with mammals and other commonly misunderstood creatures.

About our guest speaker: Nancy Lawson is the author of The Humane Gardener: Nurturing a Backyard Habitat for Wildlife, a habitat consultant, and a national speaker on garden ecology. She founded Humane Gardener to pioneer creative planting strategies and other animal-friendly landscaping methods. Lawson’s presentations at diverse venues—from national wildlife refuges to local wildflower preserves—have inspired even seasoned horticulturists and wildlife experts to look at their landscapes in a new way. Certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and master naturalist, she partners with Howard County Bee City, the Audubon Society of Central Maryland, the urban wildlife department of the Humane Society of the United States, and other conservation and animal advocacy organizations. Her book and garden have been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other media outlets.

At every meeting, we give away a book — about native plants or the meeting topic — to one randomly chosen meeting attendee!

On February 13: Wildlife in Your Garden with Kelly Simon

Join us for the next NPSOT-Wilco chapter meeting on Thursday, February 13, 2020, for “Wildlife in Your Garden” presented by Kelly Simon. We’ll meet at the Georgetown Public Library (time and location details at the bottom of this post).

Texas Wildscapes was developed by Texas Parks and Wildlife in 1995 to assist Texans in creating landscapes that are both visually appealing and attractive to appropriate wildlife. By providing the elements of habitat (food, shelter, and water) in their gardens, Texans can attract an exciting variety of birds, butterflies, frogs, and lizards and bring the beauty and vitality of nature home.

Kelly Conrad Simon has been with Texas Parks and Wildlife since 1995 and currently serves as the Urban Wildlife Biologist for the Central Texas area. Her projects generally involve the topics of native planting and wildlife habitat, exotic invasive plants, native wildlife including songbirds and woodrats, and engaging urban students of all ages in the study of nature. Kelly has coordinated the Texas Wildscapes Backyard Wildlife Habitat program and the Texas Hummingbird Round-up with Texas Parks and Wildlife, and is the author of Texas Wildscapes: Gardening for Wildlife. Her MS degree was earned in 1995 at Emporia State University (Kansas) and her BA was earned in 1992 at Southwestern University (Georgetown, Texas).

February 14: Not the Same Old Deer-Resistant Native Plants

Don’t miss NPSOT-Wilco’s chapter meeting on February 14, 2019, when our program topic is “Not the Same Old Deer-Resistant Native Plants” with NPSOT member Randy Pensabene. Randy will show you how to have a deer-resistant native landscape that also provides much needed habitat and food for birds, butterflies, bees and other wildlife.

Randy has landscaped her home with Texas native plants and been involved in several native plant demonstration gardens. She is an instructor in NPSOT’s Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) and a native plant guest speaker at area events open to the general public. She heads up the planning, plant selection, grower partnerships and a myriad of other detail for NPSOT-Wilco’s twice-yearly native plant sales which take place at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in the spring and fall of each year.

NPSOT-Williamson County meetings are free and open to the public.
