Join NPSOT-Wilco’s online chapter meeting on Thursday, June 10, 2021, at 7:00 pm, when Leah Churner will present Landscaping with Native Plants: Ten Design Principles for Home Gardeners. About the topic: Good garden design is always a balance between the aesthetic and the practical. The conventional design wisdom found in garden books is typically geared toward audiences in England, California, or the East Coast — all very different climates than ours. How can we adapt the “rules of composition” to Central Texas? In this presentation, Leah Churner (Delta Dawn Gardens) will introduce some basic principles of landscape design — how to group plants, build contrast with shapes and textures, and work with the vertical plane — and discuss how these ideas can be applied to sustainable, water-wise gardens in our area. Learn how to create a pleasing design with a palette of native plants, support local ecology, and have fun in the process!
About our speaker: Leah Churner is the owner of Delta Dawn Gardens, a landscape consultation, design, and maintenance company in Austin. She is the producer and cohost of The Horticulturati podcast, and teaches garden design in Austin Community College’s Landscape and Horticulture Continuing Education Program.
